The Chronology: from "Mystery Disc" through "Dance Me This”: here's an attempt to classify FZ's discography in a chronological way, i.e. based on the recording dates of the tracks. The list does not include compilations, nor any other assorted improvisations.

Frank Zappa is one of the most prolific artists of all time. He has a lot of live and studio albums, most being released and recorded very far apart from each other. That's why there are two Discography lists -- this one and Discography by recording date. This list documents when the albums were released themselves. Compilations are listed with underlines. Albums made with The Mothers of Invention are listed in italics. (Primarily) live releases are listed in bold. [However, if the live album contains all original music I will consider it "studio", as a venue is just a giant studio anyways.]
