Chapter member Kristin Sorra is an award-winning illustrator of several books for children. Here she discusses what it was like to illustrate a biography of former president Barack Obama and the writer-illustrator relationship.
You illustrated the Little Golden Book edition of “Barack Obama” which was released in August 2022. Tell us about how you received the assignment and what it was like to illustrate the biography of a living former president.
In February 2021, my agent forwarded me an email where the subject line read “Kristin Sorra book project,” and the first words in the message were, “You better be sitting down!!!” I remember that I was already sitting down while I quickly scrolled down the email to read it, and saw the words “Barack Obama” and “Golden Book.” Then I stood from my chair and started jumping up and down. Both my husband and daughter were home and we were just in excited disbelief.
I had never done a biographical story of such prominence, so I was a little nervous about how I was going to put my own stamp on it and still have the right likeness. I also remember thinking I had to put aside any expectations for what I thought others might think of the work (including Barack himself!) since he is such a popular pre
